Drunk driver arrested after swerving car reported in Southland

Police have arrested a woman after a member of the public reported a vehicle driving erratically between Gore and Te Anau, repeatedly crossing the centre line.

Officers stopped the car on Main Street in Gore shortly after 7.30am on Sunday and immediately noticed signs of heavy intoxication, including slurred speech and the smell of alcohol.

Breath tests showed the 38-year-old driver was almost four times the legal limit and severely impaired after attending a hen’s do with little sleep. She has been suspended from driving for 28 days and is due to appear in Gore District Court in January 2026.

Police said it was fortunate no one was injured and urged drivers to use sober drivers, taxis or rideshares when drinking, reminding the public to call 111 if they see dangerous driving.
