Two women have been arrested and charged after allegedly attempting to steal nearly $1,000 worth of groceries from a Henderson supermarket.
Police say the incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when staff alerted the Henderson Beat Team to suspected shoplifting while officers were patrolling the area. Sergeant Rachael England said the pair were stopped and arrested a short distance from the store.
Although the women had a receipt showing they had paid for just under $160 in groceries, police became suspicious after inspecting additional items found in the boot of their vehicle. Officers allege the pair had attempted to take a large quantity of unpaid groceries, including premium cat food, meat and cheese products.
The women, aged 36 and 59, have both been charged with shoplifting goods valued between $500 and $1,000. They are due to appear in the Waitākere District Court on Christmas Eve.
Sergeant England said the arrests marked the Henderson Beat Team’s 116th arrest since it launched in September, adding that the team has built strong relationships with local businesses and security staff, allowing police to respond quickly to incidents in the area.
