Police are urging kayakers to take extra precautions on the water this summer after a recent incident in Wellington prompted a search by the Police Maritime Unit.
Officers aboard the Lady Elizabeth IV were deployed to assist a man who abandoned his failing kayak and swam to shore.
Senior Sergeant Craig Pickering, who heads the Wellington Marine Rescue Centre, said the kayaker was fortunate to be safe and that the episode highlights the importance of proper preparation.
Police have outlined six key steps for anyone heading out in a kayak:
- always wear a lifejacket and keep a phone secured in a waterproof bag
- carry a second means of communication such as a marine radio or locator beacon
- ensure your kayak has identifying details
- tell someone your plans and expected return time
- check that your equipment is in good condition
- monitor weather forecasts, planning to reach a safe location before conditions change.
Pickering also encouraged kayakers to make use of local clubs and training groups for advice and safety skills. “As the weather gets warmer we’re seeing more people on the water, so our message is to be prepared,” he said, adding that anyone in trouble should call 111 immediately.
