The Hurricanes will enter the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season with a revamped ownership model after the Wellington Rugby Football Union sold its 50% stake to NZ Sport Investment Limited, a move aimed at rescuing the union from consecutive million-dollar losses.
NZSI—backed by Malcolm Gillies and Summit Capital—will take control, with Gillies becoming chair and several new directors appointed, while New Zealand Rugby steps in as a minority investor through loans and a capital injection to strengthen both the Hurricanes and WRFU.
The WRFU will retain representation on the board, and NZR will appoint members to help guide the organisation’s financial recovery.
