The Boston Celtics, one of the most successful teams in NBA history, has been sold for a record $6.1 billion (NZ$10.6 billion), marking the largest sale of a sports franchise in North America.
The deal surpasses the previous record set by the $6.05 billion sale of the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.
An investor group led by billionaire William Chisholm, with existing investor Rob Hale and real estate executive Bruce Beal Jr., acquired the team.
Current governor Wyc Grousbeck, whose family bought the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, will remain governor through the 2027-28 season.
