Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has called for his former teammate Allan ‘Alfie’ Langer to be named the next Rugby League Immortal.
Langer, who led the Broncos to four premierships had an illustrious career with Queensland and Australia between 1988-2002.
Walters told NRL.com Langer’s significant contributions, including captaining Queensland to multiple State of Origin victories and Australia’s national team. Despite his small stature Langer’s football intelligence and determination have left a lasting impact on the sport, and Walters believes it is time for Langer to receive the highest recognition in rugby league.
As the 14th Immortal will be announced on August 21, along with new inductees into the Hall of Fame, Walters argues that Langer should be prioritised over other notable candidates like Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston, and Darren Lockyer. He noted that while these players have impressive records, Langer’s historical achievements and influence on the game make him a standout choice.
