Queensland’s Super Rugby Pacific campaign came to an end in Hamilton as the Chiefs powered to a 46-24 quarter-final victory, extending the long-standing winless record of Australian teams in finals matches played in New Zealand.
The Reds remained within striking distance at halftime, trailing 22-17 after a competitive opening half, but the hosts took control after the break with returning All Blacks playmaker Damian McKenzie producing a match-winning display, scoring two tries and orchestrating several attacking raids.
Despite strong performances from Fraser McReight, Tate McDermott and Filipo Daugunu, the Reds were unable to match the Chiefs’ intensity and execution in the second half. The result sends the Chiefs into a semi-final clash with the Crusaders, while Queensland’s season concludes in what was coach Les Kiss’s final match before he takes over the Wallabies.
