England narrowly avoided a stunning World Cup exit after captain Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages to secure a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo in Atlanta and book a place in the last 16.

Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled for much of the match after falling behind to Brian Cipenga’s early goal, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi producing a series of outstanding saves to frustrate England, while Yoane Wissa also squandered a golden opportunity for DR Congo before halftime by striking the post.

With elimination looming, Kane rose to head home the equaliser in the 75th minute before producing a superb solo finish four minutes from time to complete the turnaround. The victory sends England through to a knockout clash against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, despite a performance that exposed significant weaknesses.
