Hamilton cycling star Kate McCarthy has powered to her second consecutive UCI Esports World Championship title in Abu Dhabi, crushing the 22-rider field across all three stages of the virtual MyWhoosh-based competition.
After opening a huge 28-point lead in the gruelling 8.4km hill-climb first stage, she nearly maxed out points in the second-stage checkpoint loop and sealed victory with another commanding ride in the final eight-lap sprint, finishing with 597 points ahead of Brazil’s Gabriella Guerra and Italy’s Francesca Tommasi.
McCarthy said she was “still letting it sink in” after completing a dream season.
Fellow Kiwis Bridget Kiddle placed 16th in the women’s field, while Ollie Jones finished 10th in the men’s race, where Germany’s Jason Osborne claimed his third straight title.
