Glenn Phillips’ explosive 72-ball century propelled New Zealand to a commanding 78-run victory over Pakistan in the first ODI of the tri-series in Lahore.
Struggling at times in the first innings, New Zealand was held in check by Pakistan’s disciplined bowling, with Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah taking five wickets.
However, Phillips’ late onslaught, scoring 98 runs in the final six overs, lifted the visitors to a formidable 330.
Pakistan’s chase hinged on Fakhar Zaman’s aggressive 84, but his dismissal by Phillips in the 24th over ended their hopes.
With Haris Rauf injured and the lower order unable to mount a fightback, Pakistan fell short, leaving New Zealand in a dominant position in the tournament.
