Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has defended Instagram in a closely watched Los Angeles court case, rejecting claims that the platform was deliberately engineered to addict young users or harm their mental health.
Testifying in a lawsuit brought by a 20-year-old woman who alleges social media exposure contributed to anxiety, depression and body image issues, Zuckerberg told the court Instagram does not intentionally “hook” children, despite internal company materials highlighting user engagement and time spent on the platform as key success metrics.
During questioning, lawyers presented internal Meta documents suggesting the company sought to attract younger audiences, including a presentation stating, “If we want to win big with teens, we must bring them in as tweens.”
Zuckerberg said he did not recall the context of some documents and acknowledged it remains “very difficult” to prevent under-13 users from bypassing age restrictions.
Meta’s legal team argued the plaintiff’s struggles predated social media use, while critics pointed to company research indicating vulnerable teens were more frequently exposed to harmful content.
