Argentina has renewed its claim to the Falkland Islands, with Foreign Minister Diana Mondino promising “concrete action” to regain control of the British-controlled territory, which Argentina calls the Malvinas.

Mondino’s remarks came after the UK’s decision to return control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a move Argentina welcomed as a step towards ending “outdated practices.”

Despite Argentina’s vow to pursue sovereignty, Falklands governor Alison Blake reassured residents that Britain’s commitment to the Falkland Islands remains “unwavering.”

Blake said that the historical context of the Falklands and Chagos Islands is “very different,” dismissing concerns that the Chagos deal could influence the situation in the South Atlantic.

The Falklands war in 1982, which saw British forces reclaim the islands after an Argentine invasion, continues to cast a long shadow over UK-Argentine relations.
