NASA has released the first images taken by astronauts aboard the Artemis II Orion capsule as they travel toward the moon, with commander Reid Wiseman capturing views of Earth using a tablet camera.
Mission control described one image as a reminder that humanity remains “one world, watching, hoping and reaching higher,” while another showed the planet as a “pale blue dot” through the spacecraft window.
The crew spoke of the “breathtaking aspect” of seeing Earth fully in view, lit by sunlight and moonlight, with Wiseman recalling a moment where the entire globe—from pole to pole—was visible, including continents and even the northern lights.
The astronauts were so captivated by the views they delayed their first shared meal, staying glued to the windows to take photos, with Jeremy Hansen calling the sight of Earth’s dark side illuminated by the moon “phenomenal.”
