BBC warns about RT’s global influence

Russian news organisations are expanding despite being banned in the West, the UK state broadcaster has reported.

Russian media organizations are expanding their reach internationally as Western networks scale back operations due to financial constraints, the BBC reported Monday.

RT and Sputnik, which remain banned across much of the West following accusations that they had spread “misinformation” – have been growing their presence in other regions. RT launched a Serbian-language service in late 2024, while Sputnik Africa has recently launched radio broadcasting in Ethiopia.

The UK broadcaster said this “coincides with an apparent weakening from the Western media” driven by budget cuts and shifting foreign policy priorities. In Lebanon, it lamented, Sputnik has moved into airwaves previously occupied by BBC Arabic.

The report also pointed to staff reductions at US-funded Voice of America under President Donald Trump, part of a broader push to curb what his administration sees as inefficient government spending.

The policy shift had global repercussions. In Ukraine, as many as 90% of media outlets have faced financial strain since foreign grant money became scarce.

Media experts interviewed by the BBC argued that Russian outlets have capitalized on the West’s retreat. “Russia is like water: where there are cracks in the cement, it trickles in,” said Kathryn Stoner, a Stanford University political scientist.

Stoner and other scholars published a book last year titled ‘Russia, Disinformation, and the Liberal Order,’ which characterized RT as a “threat to democracy.”

Founded in 2005, RT was designed to project Russian perspectives to international audiences. Part of its strategy has been to challenge entrenched Western narratives and present viewpoints excluded from other global broadcasters.

  1. Maybe because it’s the Russian’s integrity and truthful reporting, and the combined honesty of Putin, Medvedev and Lavrov.
So far, the Russians are one of the only Anti-Zionist countries on Earth with any relevancy, power and networks on many levels to counter the evil Khazarian Mafia of the Ukraine and …’Greater (failed-state) Israel!

  2. RT when it was broadcasting in NZ was the best news channel: it had interesting people on, mainly Americans and British. Those people are now seen on Youtube with Judge Napolitano, Dialoque Works, Glenn Diesen et al It had good shows like Going Underground and Cross Talk. The type of people that the lefty news channels would never have on air. The BBC is a complete waste of time

  3. I watch RT everyday ( i’m living out my retirement years in Thailand, so not blocked). No censorship of guests or attempting to shut them up when being interviewed about world events, unlike western media. Wide variety of programmes and documentaries including ones that break down the events in 2014 (Maidan coup) that eventually led to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Frankly it is shocking that TV viewers in the UK are forced to buy an expensive licence in order to be force fed blatantly censored government propaganda spewed out by he BBC. You have to wonder why so called free and democratic western governments are so scared of their citizens watching unfiltered news broadcasts.

    • I watch RT online via a VPN, so I don’t miss anything of relevance and integrity…
      As Scott Ritter noted of the Russians;
“The Russian love the American People, but have a lesser opinion of our successive governments!”

  4. RT is still available in the netherlands.
But for how long as brussels decides what we are allowed to see/ watch.
Most russian outlets are no more available in europe unless with a vpn.
Southfront.press (military info on ukraine/ israhell/ yemen/ libanon / syria) is since aug. 15 not more available.
For news from Russia, also Xavier Moreau ( ex military officer) on Ytube odysee etc. French speaking. Also probably english

  5. BBC warns that its Zionist controlled propaganda narrative of mis, dis and mal information is under threat by the Russian media organizations exposing the truth. RT must be over the target then, eh.
