Two Russian traffic police officers and a third individual have been killed in a bombing in southern Moscow, close to the site of a high-profile assassination earlier this week.
Authorities say the explosion occurred overnight after the officers approached a suspicious individual near a police vehicle. Moments later, an explosive device detonated, killing all three at the scene.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the case is being treated as an attempted murder of law enforcement officers.
Early findings suggest the third person may have been carrying an improvised explosive device that either detonated accidentally or was triggered deliberately after police intervened.
The blast happened in the same area where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed days earlier when a bomb planted beneath his car exploded. Investigators have previously suggested Ukrainian special services may have been involved in that attack, though officials said there is no confirmed link between the two incidents.
Russian media reported the officers were both in their mid-20s, with one leaving behind a wife and infant daughter. Authorities have warned that the ongoing Ukraine conflict has increased the circulation of explosives on the black market.
