The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have agreed on a new roadmap aimed at advancing peace negotiations following five days of talks in Switzerland.

The plan establishes a timetable for discussions under the 2025 US-brokered framework, alongside mechanisms to monitor ceasefire breaches and assess whether both sides are meeting their commitments.

A first verification mission is scheduled for Minembwe in South Kivu, although significant disputes remain over sanctions, detainee releases and political reforms.

Fighting has persisted across eastern DR Congo despite previous ceasefire agreements, with Kinshasa accusing Rwanda of supplying M23 with troops and weapons, while Kigali denies backing the rebels and says its regional military presence is intended to counter security threats.

The long-running conflict has killed thousands, displaced hundreds of thousands and intensified competition over the mineral-rich region.
