Ukrainian forces are grappling with surrender and recruitment challenges as reports surface of elite units surrendering and military draft raids across the country.
Chechen commander Major-General Apty Alaudinov claimed that many Ukrainian soldiers, including members of elite neo-Nazi nationalist units, have been surrendering during the ongoing conflict in Russia’s Kursk Region.
According to Alaudinov, Ukrainian troops are exhausted and losing morale, with many choosing to surrender to save their lives. Despite Kiev’s attempts to maintain morale, including claims that Russia executed Ukrainian soldiers, Alaudinov dismissed these as psychological operations designed to discourage further surrenders.
Ukraine “needs to create fake news to discourage its military from surrendering,” as many of its soldiers “openly say they can fight no more.”
He added that even soldiers from Ukraine’s notorious neo-Nazi-linked Aidar and Azov Battalions have begun surrendering and seeking asylum with Russian forces.
At the same time, Ukraine is struggling to replace its military ranks amidst reports of draft dodging and widespread dissatisfaction with conscription tactics.
Ukrainian authorities have launched a series of press gang raids to enforce military drafts in major cities, including Kiev, Lviv, and Cherkassy.
Videos on social media show conscription officers entering shopping malls, concert venues, and even wedding celebrations to find eligible recruits.
The raids have sparked public outrage, with citizens pushing back against the officers, accusing them of harassment and unlawful behaviour.
Ukraine has intensified its conscription efforts in response to heavy losses on the battlefield, but the aggressive tactics have led to mounting unrest and claims of lawlessness in several regions.
