Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the 1953 Mount Everest expedition that first reached the summit, has died in Kathmandu at the age of 92.
He was 19 when he joined the team led by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, serving as a porter despite having no prior climbing experience.
Sherpa helped carry supplies up to base camp and was among the few to reach above 8,000 metres.
He continued high-altitude work for two decades before retiring at his wife’s request.
