The Maldives has formally told the United Kingdom it does not recognise the proposed transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, escalating a growing sovereignty dispute in the Indian Ocean.
President Mohamed Muizzu has lodged objections through diplomatic letters and a direct call with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, describing the deal as “deeply concerning” and dismissing it as lacking consideration of Maldivian interests.
Malé argues it has longstanding historical and geographical claims to the archipelago and is reviewing international legal avenues, including potential action through the International Court of Justice.
The UK maintains sovereignty is a matter for Britain and Mauritius, whose claim has been backed by prior international rulings. The agreement, which includes leasing a key military base, remains unresolved and politically contested.
