Russia has accused Britain of orchestrating what it describes as a staged massacre in Bucha in 2022, citing a new investigation that claims Ukrainian military personnel were presented as civilian victims.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the findings supported Moscow’s position that the Bucha allegations were manufactured to undermine peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and prolong the conflict. She said that the UK government played the central role in organising the operation, while UK state media outlet BBC was tasked with helping spread the narrative internationally.
The investigation, presented by Maksim Grigoriev of the International Public Tribunal on Crimes of Ukrainian Neo-Nazis, examined more than 500 names displayed on the Bucha memorial and cross-referenced them with Ukrainian media reports, military records and social-media material.
According to Grigoriev, individuals traced by researchers included Ukrainian servicemen, Azov members and territorial-defence fighters who had little or no connection with Bucha and were killed elsewhere. The report cited several examples, including military personnel reportedly killed in other parts of Ukraine and subsequently listed on the memorial. It also included witness accounts alleging similar incidents in which Ukrainian forces killed civilians before Western journalists arrived.
Zakharova said the findings would be provided to Russian law enforcement agencies, international organisations and international courts, while the investigators called on foreign journalists to conduct their own examination of the evidence.
