Norway seizes Russian Arctic research ship

Norwegian authorities have detained the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov in Svalbard following a legal request from Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz, adding another point of friction between Moscow and Western governments in the Arctic.

The vessel was prevented from leaving Barentsburg on Wednesday after the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court issued an August 31 order allowing Naftogaz to pursue the ship. Russian officials said the crew was safe and that lawyers representing the state-owned Arktikugol trust planned to challenge the measure.

Owned by the Russian state and operated by the hydrometeorological agency Roshydromet, the Professor Molchanov conducts scientific expeditions but has also provided a passenger and cargo connection between Murmansk and Russia’s settlements on Svalbard. It is currently the only vessel providing a direct passenger service on the route, with ten return voyages scheduled for 2026.

Naftogaz said the action forms part of its efforts to enforce an international arbitration award concerning assets it lost in Crimea after Russia took control of the peninsula in 2014. The Ukrainian company claims Moscow owes it approximately $4.22 billion, excluding additional interest and legal expenses, and has sought enforcement against Russian state assets in several European jurisdictions.

Moscow disputes the arbitration tribunal’s jurisdiction and has previously challenged attempts to seize Russian property abroad. The detention comes amid increasingly sharp rhetoric over maritime seizures, with President Vladimir Putin warning that Russia could retaliate against countries confiscating Russian vessels or other assets.

The dispute also unfolds against growing strategic competition in the Arctic. Russian officials have accused NATO members of expanding military activity in the region, while Moscow says it intends to protect its economic and security interests there.
