Russell Brand faces historical sex charges amid backlash over timing and motive

British comedian and popular social commentator Russell Brand has been formally charged with rape and multiple counts of sexual assault in connection with alleged incidents that occurred between 1999 and 2005.

The charges, announced by the Metropolitan Police in a public statement, include one count of rape, one count of oral rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault involving four separate women.

Brand, 50, has denied all allegations, stating previously that he has “never had non-consensual sex.” His legal representatives have not yet commented on the new charges.

The investigation gained momentum in 2023 after a joint report by legacy media outlet The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches broadcast claims from four women who accused Brand of misconduct between 2006 and 2013—separate from the timeline covered by the current criminal charges. The media attention led to an ongoing police investigation, with authorities now encouraging additional individuals to come forward.

The allegations date back over two decades and have emerged publicly long after Brand rose to fame as a television personality, actor, and stand-up comedian. Some observers and commentators have questioned the timing of the charges, noting that they appeared after Brand shifted away from mainstream entertainment and became a well-known independent commentator on political and social issues, highly critical of Big Pharma and western governments.

Brand, once married to American pop star Katy Perry, has in recent years gained a huge following online for his videos discussing topics such as corporate influence, pharmaceutical companies, media bias, and government overreach.

Following news of the charges, reactions online have been sharply divided. Some social media users and commentators have raised concerns about what they describe as the continued weaponisation of the legal system to discredit or silence a high-profile and popular social critic. They point to the fact that no formal allegations were made during Brand’s peak years in the mainstream spotlight and that the charges only surfaced once he had taken on a more political and oppositional role.

Transgender social commentator Blaire White stated that she had been contacted by British media in connection with the 2023 reports, despite having no personal involvement with Brand. She described the approach as “very organised and vicious,” suggesting a coordinated effort to discredit him.

Under UK law, there is no statute of limitations for serious criminal offences.

Brand responded to the charges acknowledging that while he had been a drug and sex addict in his youth, he had never engaged in non-consensual sex.

In a video on X he said that in a way “we are very fortunate to live in a time when there is very little trust in the British government. We are living in a time when we know that the law is becoming a kind of weapon, to be used against people, institutions and sometime entire nations that will not accept and tolerate levels of corruption that are unprecedented.”

  1. I listen to Brand on and off. He’s not my go to commentator but he makes some decent points, about the breadth and depth of corruption, in the West. I would say these so called historic cases, are unfair. If they are going to do this, there needs to be proper “hard” evidence not just hearsay. Its all too easy, to manipulate this into a case where one would not exist, otherwise. Why too, was this not exposed back then, why wait so long?

Interesting too, how it seems to be people who target the mainstream narrative, who come under criminal investigation. Why are we not seeing more investigation into say the Epstein files (still waiting for those be released and no doubt will be waiting until hell freezes over)?

All in all this looks highly questionable, to my way of thinking.

  2. Soon see if he has anything to answer for. Wouldn’t trust the guy as far as I could throw him. He can be funny though.

No statute of limitations for serious crimes like rape and sexual assault. Trauma can often take years to confront and come to light, which could be a reason for the length of time since the incidents

    • Why don’t you trust him? Do you prefer RNZ or maybe OneViews? Brand is well researched and can back up he has to say.

  3. Brand, Carlson, Taibbi, Rogan, JP, Robinson – ready to sacrifice everything for truth. See that some trolls are visiting this site. Would like to give them an idea but don’t want to corrupt their minds.

    • Yep, some pretty sustained trolling over this article, not 100% sure why? I suspect some people just don’t like uncomfortable truths and others need someone, to hate……

  4. A very long time ago it happened to me too. Multiple complaints. Not guilty is not a joyful moment. It will be a relief . It will be a time to rest. Thankful it is all over. It is unlikely to find 12 people to convict when such a sham government and judges pretend to be legitimate while shoving complete nonsense down our throats.

Gather your evidence, engage with the public, be calm, be patient. Seek strength from others.

  5. Russell Brand charged with speaking truth.

“How do you plead Mr. Brand?”

“Guilty of speaking the truth, your Honour!”

“You are sentenced to a custodial sentence for speaking the truth Mr. Brand in the great people’s democracy of the UK. We believe strongly in democracy and by speaking truth that we do not approve of, you are an enemy of democracy. Do not make the same mistakes as Tommy Robinson who we have made sure may die in prison because we care and are compassionate. Remember, we are the government, and we are always right, and anybody who opposes us is always wrong. You can only speak the truth that we approve of.”
