Tropical Cyclone Tam is forecast to become a deep subtropical low as it approaches New Zealand from the northwest on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and severe easterly gales to parts of the North Island and upper South Island through to Friday, says MetService.

Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and several inland and western regions are under Orange Warnings or Watches for damaging winds and potentially flooding rain.

Gusts may reach 140 km/h in exposed areas, and rainfall totals could exceed 180mm. Residents are urged to secure property, avoid travel in hazardous areas, and monitor further updates via the MetService.com website as warnings may be upgraded.
