A 39-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing off the Queensland coast, marking Australia’s second fatal shark incident in as many weeks.
Police said the man suffered critical head injuries near Kennedy Shoal, about 45 kilometres offshore, and was pulled from the water by another diver before being taken back to shore, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the group had travelled by private boat to the reef area and are now preparing a report for the coroner. The tragedy follows another deadly shark attack near Perth last week involving a 38-year-old spearfisherman, renewing attention on the risks faced in Australian coastal waters despite relatively low numbers of fatal encounters overall.
