Tanzania erupts in violence after disputed election and internet blackout

Tanzania has been gripped by widespread unrest after a disputed general election sparked protests and violent clashes in Dar es Salaam and other cities.

Demonstrations intensified as authorities imposed a curfew, ordered civil servants to remain at home, and shut down internet access across the country.

According to reports from Reuters and Al Jazeera, police fired live rounds and tear gas to disperse crowds, with at least two people confirmed dead.

The turmoil followed the October 29 election, in which President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party sought her first full term after taking over from the late John Magufuli in 2021. The vote was marred by controversy after both major opposition candidates — Tundu Lissu of CHADEMA and Luhaga Mpina of ACT-Wazalendo — were barred from running. ‘

Amnesty International and other rights groups condemned the crackdown, while internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported a “nationwide digital blackout.” The government has yet to release casualty figures or comment on the escalating violence.

  1. Yet another corrupt leader plunders and murders in what should have been a thriving African nation but instead is desperately poor.
