Karmelo Anthony, now 18, has been indicted for first-degree murder by a Collin County grand jury in the fatal stabbing of fellow 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during an altercation at a Frisco ISD track meet in April.
The case has attracted significant attention in the U.S.
Anthony, who was 17 at the time and is being tried as an adult, allegedly admitted to the stabbing, telling police Metcalf had put hands on him after he warned him not to.
His attorney argues the act may have been in self-defense and looks forward to presenting the full story at trial.
Surveillance footage captured part of the incident, though individuals were not clearly visible.
The indictment follows weeks of evidence review.
Austin Metcalf’s father said justice may come, but nothing will bring his son back. A trial judge will now be assigned to the case.
