President Donald Trump has ordered 300 National Guard troops into Chicago, citing what he called “out-of-control crime,” following an immigration protest where an armed woman was shot after ramming law enforcement vehicles.
The move, condemned by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker as “manufacturing a crisis,” comes as a federal judge in Oregon blocked a similar deployment to Portland, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to state sovereignty.
Trump defended the move as necessary to combat “lawlessness” in Democrat-led cities, saying troops would help restore order, but Democrats warn it blurs the line between civil and military authority and may spark further unrest.
