U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine will ultimately have to surrender some of its territory to Russia as part of any eventual peace settlement to end the ongoing conflict.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said it was unlikely the war could end “without taking significant property from Ukraine,” arguing that Russia had already gained control of substantial areas. “He’s going to take something. I mean, they fought, and he has a lot of property,” Trump said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While Ukraine has repeatedly rejected any territorial concessions, Moscow insists that Kiev must withdraw its forces from regions it now claims as part of Russia before peace can be achieved.
Trump also confirmed he has not yet decided whether to supply Ukraine with long-range US-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, a key topic in his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He said the United States “can’t give all of our weapons to Ukraine” and said he would not risk weakening US defense capability.
The remarks came days after Trump’s phone call with Putin, during which the Russian leader reportedly warned that supplying such missiles to Ukraine would worsen US-Russia relations and undermine prospects for peace.
