The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation that would make gender transition treatments for minors a federal crime, advancing a proposal backed by conservative Republicans but facing steep odds in the Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Georgia Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, passed on Wednesday by a 216–211 vote. Known as the ‘Protect Children’s Innocence Act’, the measure would impose prison sentences of up to 10 years for medical professionals who perform “genital or bodily mutilation” or “chemical castration” on individuals under 18. The legislation covers surgical procedures as well as the prescription of puberty blockers and hormone treatments intended for gender transition.
Greene argued ahead of the vote that children should not be subjected to irreversible medical decisions, saying minors should be allowed to mature without pressure to undergo life-altering interventions.
The House vote aligns with a broader policy shift under President Donald Trump, who has moved to roll back federal support for transgender-related policies since returning to office.
His administration has ended government backing for gender transition treatments for those under 19, restricted transgender participation in women’s sports, and reinstated limits on transgender service in the US military.
Democrats strongly opposed the bill, accusing Republicans of targeting a small and vulnerable population and warning it could override parental authority and criminalise doctors providing care they say is supported by mainstream medical standards.
