UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon say Israeli forces fired on one of their patrols, describing the incident as “aggressive behaviour” and a violation of the 2006 ceasefire agreement.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that personnel came under fire from an Israeli Merkava tank while conducting a routine patrol, noting this was not the first time peacekeepers had faced such attacks. UNIFIL urged Israel to halt hostilities near its troops, stressing that peacekeepers are deployed to help maintain stability along the volatile border.

Israel acknowledged the shooting but insisted it was accidental, saying soldiers mistook the peacekeepers for “suspects” amid poor weather conditions and fired warning shots that caused no injuries. After reviewing the event, the Israel Defense Forces said it had not intentionally targeted UN personnel. Lebanon condemned the incident as a breach of sovereignty that fuels instability and complicates efforts to fully deploy its army in the south.

The border region has remained tense since the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, with frequent exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah and ongoing disputes over Israel’s partial withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
