Watch: Ukrainian encirclement imminent as Russian soldiers seal Kursk border

Russian troops in the Kursk Region have reinforced the border with newly placed mines after a recent breach by Ukrainian forces, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Footage released by the military shows anti-tank mines and concrete barriers along the border, where Ukrainian forces reportedly attempted to enter in August. Two Russian soldiers, part of the Tula-based 106th Guards Airborne Division, used captured Ukrainian mines to seal a gap created by an earlier Ukrainian mine-breaching vehicle.

The operation near the border village of Novy Put is part of a broader Russian strategy to hinder Ukrainian supply routes and contain the incursion, with the ultimate aim of encircling what remains of the Ukrainian forces.

Moscow reports significant Ukrainian losses in the incursion – 29,600 casualties, 184 tanks, 106 infantry fighting vehicles, more than 1,000 armoured vehicles and scores of other pieces of heavy weaponry, including 26 military engineering vehicles.

Ukraine claims that its actions have slowed Russian advancements in eastern territories. Russian forces, however, made substantial gains in October, reportedly capturing more ground than in any previous month this year.
