Police updates – Invercargill meat theft, North Taieri and Hastings fatal accidents

Police updates 19 July 2022 news

Police updates on crimes and investigations for 19 July 2022.

Name release, fatal crash, Pakowhai Road, Hastings

Police are now in a position to confirm the name of the person who died in the crash on Pakowhai Road on 12 July.

She was 24-year-old Jordan Meranema Mangakahia of Havelock North.

Police are still working to understand the circumstances surrounding Ms Mangakahia’s death.

Police are interested in speaking with anyone who was in the vicinity of the crash scene on Tuesday, 12 July, between 6pm and 6:15pm.

Anyone who was on Pakowhai or Brookfields roads is urged to come forward with any information they may have.

Any information can be given directly to Detective Constable Mike Godwin at the Hastings Police Station or via 105, quoting file number 220713/7116.

Invercargill Police seek help to find burglars

Invercargill Police are appealing for the public’s help to find out who was responsible for stealing from a local charitable organisation.

At about 6pm on Sunday, 17 July, Police were alerted to a vehicle fire at Sandy Point past the Te Ara Oue Track.

The fire-damaged red Nissan ‘Caravan’ van had previously been stolen from a North Road property between 6 and 7 July.

A large chest freezer full of meat was also stolen from the same property the van was taken from.

The meat was destined to help people in need.

Police believe more than one person would have been involved due to the weight of the meat-laden freezer.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have been offered cheap meat or knows of someone who has come into possession of a large amount of meat they wouldn’t normally have.

Anyone with information that may assist is asked to contact Police via our 105 phone service or online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report. Please reference file number 220708/1225.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111, or online via www.crimestoppers-nz.org.

Name release, North Taieri

Police can now release the name of the woman who died following an incident at Silver Stream, North Taieri, on Tuesday 12 July.

She was Sarah Jane Shirley, 29, of Dunedin.

Appalling driver behaviour disappoints Nelson Police

Nelson Police are appalled at the driving behaviour of some motorists following an operation on State Highway 6 Whakatu Drive on the weekend.

During the three-hour operation across Friday and Saturday nights seven people were processed for drink driving and 12 notices issued for excessive speed and insecure loads.

Nelson Bays Road Policing Acting Senior Sergeant Tyson Martin says those caught speeding were often inexperienced young drivers breaching their licence conditions and carrying passengers. Depending on the offence a restricted or learner driver could be liable for an infringement fine, have their vehicle impounded or licence suspended.

He says Police have previously detected high speeds in the area so we will continue to target road users who create a risk on our roads.

In the past year, Police have attended multiple crashes, as well as 119 reports of insecure loads on Whakatu Drive and the Richmond Deviation alone.

“The flow-on effect of an insecure load dropping onto the motorway creates serious hazards to vehicles and occupants and can significantly increase commute times,” says Acting Senior Sergeant Martin.

“Please slow down – secure the load on your vehicle or trailer – and do not drink and drive.”
