New Zealand Women’s Football Team loses to Canada

The New Zealand women’s football team delivered a commendable performance in their Olympic opener, narrowly losing 2-1 to the higher-ranked Canadian team in Saint-Étienne.

The lead-up to the match was fraught with difficulties, including the sudden resignation of coach Jitka Klimková, who was replaced by Michael Mayne, and the injury withdrawal of their captain Ali Riley, replaced by Michaela Foster with Katie Bowen stepping in as captain. Additionally, the team faced an unusual distraction when Canadian officials used a drone to spy on their training sessions.

Despite these setbacks the New Zealand team put in a good performance, taking an early lead in the 12th minute through Mackenzie Barry’s stunning goal. However, Canada’s dominance soon became evident, with Cloé Lacasse equalising just before halftime and Evelyne Viens scoring the decisive goal in the final 10 minutes. New Zealand goalie Anna Leat made several crucial saves to keep her team in contention. The New Zealand team will now focus on their upcoming match against Colombia in Lyon on Monday.
