Commissioners have declined consent for a McDonald’s restaurant in Wānaka, citing concerns over its impact on the town’s visual and natural landscape.
The proposed 455-square-metre drive-thru restaurant on Wānaka-Luggate Highway faced strong opposition from the community, with most of the 367 public submissions against it.
Residents and groups, including the Wao Aotearoa Charitable Trust, argued that the development would harm the scenic entrance to Wānaka and fail to align with the area’s commitment to preserving its environment.
While some locals supported the proposal for increased food options, they suggested conditions like restricted opening hours and contributions to local environmental projects.
Commissioners ultimately ruled that the project was inconsistent with the landscape values of the site and its rural surroundings.
