Stuff closes 15 community papers amid tense union standoff over pay and health benefits

Stuff news

Legacy mainstream media company Stuff is shutting down around 15 community newspapers—including long-standing Auckland titles under the Auckland Community Newspapers umbrella—and transitioning the Marlborough Express to digital-only, with nearly 15 job losses expected.

Among the closed titles are the Cambridge Edition, Nelson Tasman Leader, and Hutt News. Stuff downplayed the scale of the closures on its website, referring only to “several” papers, despite the widespread impact on regional coverage.

At the same time, a bitter pay and conditions dispute has erupted between Stuff and the E tū union, which represents more than 140 journalists.

According to a report in legacy media (paywalled), tensions have escalated over proposed cuts to health insurance and Stuff’s refusal to reunite two separated collective contracts—one for Stuff Digital and one for Stuff Masthead Publishing.

Union delegates accuse Stuff of using divide-and-conquer tactics and breaching good-faith bargaining by withholding a pay offer.

The unrest comes as Stuff finalises a commercial partnership with Trade Me, a deal believed to benefit owner Sinead Boucher significantly, and raises questions about whether Stuff’s staff trust—meant to give employees a stake in the company—will deliver the promised benefits.

  4. Stuff have caused so much harm to companion animals and people, they will pay the price in time to come and it will deliver great satisfaction.

  5. It’s almost as though nobody is interested in reading depraved woke/communist propaganda anymore.

  6. STUFF is and always will be a bought and paid for government propaganda rag. Its complete shutdown would be the best outcome for everyone in NZ.
