Washington targets Colombian leader with sanctions over alleged drug ties

Gustavo Petro sanctions news

The US has slapped sweeping sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his family, and top officials, accusing him of enabling drug cartels despite his government’s record seizures.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed cocaine production has surged under Petro, prompting President Trump to “take strong action.”

The sanctions freeze assets and bar American entities from dealings, extending to the first lady, Petro’s son, and the interior minister.

Petro denounced the move as “arbitrary” and colonial, insisting Colombia remains committed to fighting narcotics and accusing Washington of acting like an “oppressive regime” following its deadly anti-drug strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific.
