The Covid Royal Commission Inquiry has been hit by another senior departure, with executive director Andrew Sweet resigning after less than eight months in the role, becoming the second executive director to quit this year and the latest in a string of high-level exits.
Sweet, who replaced Helen Potiki after her five-month tenure and joined following earlier resignations from senior legal counsel Kristy McDonald KC and Nick Whittington, declined to explain his decision beyond saying he was pursuing “other opportunities”.
The turnover has renewed concerns about internal processes and staff treatment as the Inquiry approaches its February 2026 reporting deadline.
Internal Affairs Minister Brooke Van Velden said Sweet kept the Inquiry on schedule and left on good terms. The Inquiry’s newsletter announced his departure and introduced new executive director Helen Wyn.
