Takapuna Grammar School on Auckland’s North Shore is grieving the death of much-loved maths teacher Kevin Hu, who died in a diving accident, understood to have occurred in Fiji.
Principal Mary Nixon said Hu, who joined the school three years ago, quickly became an integral and inspiring member of the staff, known for making maths “accessible and fun” and deeply valued by students and colleagues.
Parents, students and the wider community have shared heartfelt tributes online, describing him as patient, kind and one of the best teachers their children had ever had.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is aware of the death of a New Zealander in Fiji, while the school has offered support to students and staff and will release no further details out of respect for Hu’s family.
