Macron set to launch new ‘voluntary military service’ scheme

French President Emmanuel Macron is preparing to introduce a new voluntary military service programme, reportedly a ten-month compensated scheme, as part of efforts to strengthen national defense amid what he calls a “lasting threat” from Russia.

The initiative, first discussed in July, would mark a major shift since France suspended compulsory conscription in 1997, with up to 50,000 participants expected annually. The move aligns France with several European nations that have expanded or reinstated military service since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022.

While France continues to be a strong supporter of Ukraine, Russia has dismissed Western security concerns and criticised the EU’s growing militarisation.
