Israel launches ‘pre-emptive’ strike on Iran

Air raid sirens rang out across Israel early this morning as the government confirmed it had launched what Defence Minister Israel Katz described as a ‘pre-emptive strike’ against Iran, triggering a nationwide state of emergency amid fears of retaliatory missile attacks.

The escalation comes while US-Iran negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme remain unresolved.

Israel has argued military action was necessary to counter growing threats linked to Iran’s missile capabilities, while Tehran has warned it will respond forcefully to any aggression and rejected demands to curb its regional alliances or ballistic missile programme.

Reports from Iranian media indicate multiple explosions across Tehran.

More to follow.
