The Sensible Sentencing Trust says it fears convicted child abduction offender John Tekuru could reoffend after being released early from a 12-month sentence, only to be returned to custody a week later for breaching strict release conditions.
Tekuru was jailed last year for an attempted abduction of a child, which he did with the intent of sexual abuse.
Trust spokesperson Louise Parsons told state media the short sentence meant limited risk assessment and no Parole Board oversight, and is urging Corrections to pursue stronger controls such as an Extended Supervision Order or Public Protection Order.
Corrections says no such applications have been made and that Tekuru was subject to tight conditions, including electronic monitoring and restrictions around children, before his breach led to his re-arrest, where he remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance.

Short or long term but sooner or later dangerous people will be released. The simple answer is legislate for permanent monitoring. Relatively cheap (compared to the cost of incarceration) and not hard to implement.
