Swiss voters narrowly reject population cap as migration debate deepens

Swiss immigration referendum

Switzerland has narrowly rejected a Swiss People’s Party (SVP) proposal to cap its population at 10 million.

The measure was defeated by 54.8% to 45.2% on a turnout of 59%, well above the 48% referendum average. The Government, business groups and the EU lined up against the cap, branding the plan a “chaos initiative” and a “Swiss Brexit”.

The cap would have been a world first. “This has legitimised talk about capping the population.

The genie is out of the bottle,” said a Green Party lawmaker. The Swiss population stands at 9.1 million, 41% of them coming from a migration background. Read more at Reuters, The European Conservative and Breitbart.
