Convicted serial killer Rex Heuermann has been sentenced to the maximum penalty after admitting to the murders of eight women whose remains were discovered on Long Island over a span of nearly two decades.
A New York court ordered Heuermann to serve multiple life sentences without the possibility of release, bringing a close to one of the region’s most notorious murder investigations.
During an emotional sentencing hearing, relatives of the victims described years of grief, trauma and unanswered questions. Many addressed Heuermann directly, condemning him for the suffering inflicted on their families.
Judge Timothy Mazzei delivered a blistering rebuke before imposing sentence, telling Heuermann: “You are a disgusting and despicable, small man, if you’re a man at all. And you’re a coward.”
Heuermann briefly acknowledged responsibility for the killings and expressed remorse, saying his words now carried little meaning. The murders occurred between 1993 and 2010, with several victims identified as sex workers. Authorities finally arrested the architect in 2023 after DNA evidence linked him to the crimes. Prosecutors praised the victims’ families for their perseverance, while many relatives said the sentence offered long-awaited justice after years of pain and uncertainty.
