Szoboszlai rescues Liverpool with late penalty

Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty to earn Liverpool a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park, denying new Magpies manager Matthias Jaissle victory in his opening match.

Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle the lead before Cody Gakpo equalised after half-time, only for substitute Joe Willock to quickly restore the hosts’ advantage.

Newcastle appeared set for all three points until Lewis Hall brought down Victor Munoz in the area, allowing Szoboszlai to smash home the resulting spot-kick with virtually the final touch.

The match followed an emotional pre-game tribute to Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan, who died last month aged 75.
