A homicide investigation is underway after a man was critically wounded during an altercation in Blockhouse Bay at the weekend.
Operation Falconer has been established to investigate what unfolded on the afternoon of 22 August.
Acting Detective Inspector Craig Bolton, of Auckland City CIB, says Police were initially contacted after events had occurred.
A violent confrontation has occurred at around 3.40pm on Holbrook Street, near the intersection of Shoreham Street, Blockhouse Bay.
“The male victim has sustained a stab wound during this confrontation, before he has got into a vehicle with his associates and driven away to a nearby bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Road,” said Bolton.
An ambulance was called immediately
The male was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and Police were notified.
“At hospital he has undergone emergency surgery, being kept in intensive care.
“Sadly, we can advise the man has since succumbed to those injuries and died in hospital during the evening of 23 August.
Police are seeking any witnesses to the initial confrontation on Holbrook Street or near the bus stop on nearby Blockhouse Bay Road.
Bolton said scene examinations were carried out in two locations on Saturday, including where the victim was located by ambulance staff.
Police have also searched the scene where the initial altercation took place.
“I’m asking anyone who was in the area at the time and has information, to come forward,” Acting Detective Inspector Bolton says.
“If you have dashcam footage, CCTV footage or saw anything – we need to hear from you.”
Police have been liaising with the man’s next of kin since Saturday afternoon’s events.
“Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time, and we will continue to update them on progress in our enquiries.”
The homicide investigation remains in the early stages.
At this stage, Police have sought and been granted interim non-public orders around the victim’s name from the Coroner’s Office, Bolton said.
Under section 74 of the Coroners Act, the man’s full name and identifying particulars cannot be reported or published.
“We are in a sensitive phase of our investigation, and we haven’t taken this step lightly, but the community can be reassured that we are working to identify those present and responsible,” Acting Detective Inspector Bolton says.
