A police staff member is facing 39 criminal charges, including three counts of rape, five of indecent assault, kidnapping, unlawful sexual connection, assault, threats to kill or cause grievous bodily harm, and making intimate visual recordings, according to information obtained by state media RNZ.
The case is among 10 active prosecutions stemming from investigations by the National Integrity Unit (NIU), which was established in 2020 to investigate potential corruption and serious wrongdoing within New Zealand Police.
Another staff member faces assault, blackmail and indecent assault allegations, while other cases involve alleged firearms trafficking, dishonest computer access, false information supplied when joining Police, drug offending and attempts to obstruct or pervert the course of justice. Police declined to provide further details about the person facing 39 charges because of suppression orders.
Figures released under the Official Information Act state media show about 40 staff were under NIU investigation as of May, while 22 prosecutions have been initiated following NIU investigations between January 2020 and May 2026.
