Jury deadlocked in mother’s trial over deaths of three young children

Jurors remain deadlocked in the Massachusetts murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the 36-year-old former labour and delivery nurse accused of killing her three young children at their Duxbury home in January 2023.

Clancy does not dispute strangling five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan with exercise bands before attempting to take her own life by cutting herself and jumping from a second-storey window, which left her paralysed.

The central question is whether she was criminally responsible at the time, with her defence arguing she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors contend she understood right from wrong and deliberately planned the killings.

After jurors reported for a second time that they could not reach a unanimous verdict, Judge William Sullivan delivered a Tuey-Rodriguez instruction encouraging further deliberations without requiring anyone to surrender an honestly held view.

The nine-woman, three-man jury was subsequently dismissed for the day and will return to continue considering the three first-degree murder charges.

  1. It’s a thing: men are asking their girlfriend if she believes Clancy is criminally responsible for the murder of her own children. The men are then immediately ending their relationship if they are not satisfied with their girlfriend’s response.
