The Jewish International Film Festival in Malmö, Sweden, has been cancelled after cinemas across the city declined to host it, with some citing “security reasons,” according to organisers.
Festival co-organiser Sam Klebanov said in a Facebook post that “finding a cinema for the festival turned out to be a real challenge,” noting that no arthouse venue agreed to screen the films. Some claimed scheduling conflicts, while others raised security concerns despite no direct threats being received.
Police had offered to provide extra protection for the event, which was intended to celebrate 250 years of Jewish heritage in Sweden from November 29 to December 2.
Swedish Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand condemned the cancellation as “an absolute disaster for society.” The decision follows similar difficulties faced by Jewish cultural events in several Western countries since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in 2023.
