Titanic and LOTR actor Bernard Hill passes away aged 79

Bernard Hill, renowned for his memorable performances in iconic films such as Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, has died at the age of 79.

His portrayal of Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning epic Titanic and King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy left an indelible mark on cinema.

Hill first garnered attention for his role as Yosser Hughes in the BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff, a portrayal of a man grappling with unemployment in Liverpool. His powerful performance earned him widespread acclaim.

His agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his passing early Sunday morning, leaving many in the industry and fans shocked and saddened.

Alan Bleasdale, the creator of Boys from the Blackstuff was shocked to hear of Hill’s unexpected passing, recalling to the BBC the actor’s ‘mesmerising portrayal’ of Yosser Hughes, a character that became synonymous with his talent.

Despite his Manchester roots, Hill’s talent transcended borders, captivating audiences worldwide. His upcoming appearance in the BBC drama The Responder alongside Martin Freeman, was highly anticipated, further underscoring his enduring appeal.

Lindsay Salt, BBC Drama director, paid tribute to Hill’s career, describing him as a trailblazer whose remarkable roles ‘will forever be etched’ in the annals of television history.

Hill’s versatility as an actor was evident in his diverse range of roles, from the gritty realism of Boys from the Blackstuff to the historical drama of Wolf Hall and the epic fantasy of The Lord of the Rings.

His absence at Comic Con Liverpool, where he was scheduled to appear, left fans and organisers devastated.

Scottish musician Barbara Dickson joined the outpouring of tributes, remembering Hill as a remarkable actor whose presence ‘enriched the lives of those he encountered’.

Hill was married to actress Marianna Hill. They had one son. His cause of death has not yet been released.

    Indeed. I have never forgotten Bernad’s performance in Bleasdale’s masterpiece.
