China has eased visa application requirements for Indian citizens by rolling out a new online application system aimed at speeding up processing times and reducing paperwork.
The move is part of a set of “people-centric” confidence-building measures agreed between Beijing and New Delhi as both sides work to stabilise relations after years of tension. Under the new system, most documents can now be submitted digitally, cutting down the time applicants spend in the early stages of the process.
The development follows steps by India to shorten approval times for business visas for Chinese professionals, reversing tighter controls introduced after a deadly border clash in June 2020. Relations between the two countries have gradually improved, with India resuming tourist visas for Chinese citizens earlier this year, the restoration of direct flights after a five-year pause, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China in 2025.
Beijing has said it is committed to managing the relationship from a long-term strategic perspective as engagement between the neighbours continues to rebuild.
